Privacy & Data
Prelaunch draft — review and customize before commercial publication.
Local-first storage
The current Lite app stores vehicle information, service logs, and fuel records in this browser's local storage. MileNook does not have user accounts or server synchronization in this version. Clearing site data may erase local records. Export backups regularly.
Optional VIN lookup
The Add Vehicle form can retrieve year, make, and model using the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) vPIC API. This happens only after you click Look up VIN; the VIN is sent directly from your browser to NHTSA for decoding. MileNook does not submit your VIN to its own notification server. NHTSA is an independent government service and may process the request under its own privacy practices. You may skip the lookup and enter vehicle details manually. A decoded VIN is not proof of maintenance history, warranty coverage, or manufacturer service intervals.
Location and weather
Weather is optional. You can enter a US ZIP code (looked up via Zippopotam.us) or grant device location permission. If you choose phone location, MileNook rounds coordinates to three decimal places and saves your approximate forecast location in this browser so it can reload the weather automatically. The approximate coordinates are sent to the National Weather Service to get forecasts and alerts. Your ZIP lookup is sent to Zippopotam.us. You can remove your saved weather location with the Change location button. The last successful weather snapshot is also stored locally. Requests need internet; neither service is operated by MileNook. NWS data is not a substitute for official emergency warnings.
Optional service push notifications
If the site owner enables push notifications, and you actively opt in, the app sends a browser-generated anonymous device ID, push subscription, and the minimum service reminder details (vehicle description, service type, dates, due-mileage thresholds, and your last entered odometer reading) to the owner's Cloudflare reminder service. Your phone number, VIN, license plate, fuel transactions, and precise location are not sent for reminders. The system checks active reminders approximately once daily and can deliver alerts when MileNook is closed. No delivery is guaranteed; use your normal maintenance schedules as backup. Clicking Turn off & delete in the app deletes the server-side device and reminder records. Users can also revoke notification permissions in their browser settings. The beta may require an activation code provided by the MileNook owner.

Paid Premium purchases are handled by a separate third-party checkout only after the seller enables it. Review the payment provider's terms before paying.
